With a warm light and a notable neatness in the image, this edition dedicated to a selection within the photographic production of Constanza Miranda is presented, which for the first time only has images from digital photography. The supremacy of this warm light intensifies the sensation of free time, dedicated to leisure, to the vacations that are conveyed in each one of the coloured images. This issue makes me reflect on the fact that if photography had a moment in which it constituted a privilege in the hands of an amateur photographer, giving them the possibility of portraying their lives, as well as, the tourism trips or resting ones have been part of this privilege that is becoming commonized. Thus, both practices have been transforming themselves, and intertwined give the possibility to contemplate the world, as if together they were moving the limits of actions that do not have any objective other that the one of “being”. The bodies laying facing the sun changing their colour, allowing them to have the sign that during, and after vacations, will give them the information so that whoever looks at them achieve to interpret that practice of privilege: since mid 20th century, paleness is sign of living in closure, maybe in sickness or the slavery of modern work.
When we enter that same space of privilege, in the plain of contemplation and reflection, and we stop to observe these photographies, the idea of watching a clear geometric composition in the frames –as if the bodies disposed themselves neatly intentionally- emerge, that make that these images tend to the abstract. That abstraction is reinforced by the photographies of urban architecture, buildings, tennis courts and window stores, in which the squares, the circles, the straight lines and almost perfect forms take protagonism. Then I do not see buildings anymore, I do not see clothes, I do not see bathers. I see a perfect orange circle, I see glazed squares, I see light blue cloth triangles, black, a little red rhombus, I see different colored rectangles, a tiny yellow ellipse and a striped white and red square. And we can still deepen a little within the plain of contemplation. When I first saw this selection, with it´s intelligent order, I felt anguish, some kind of indescribable loneliness and I did not have clarity of where that feeling was coming from. Now, that I write this text I´ve got carried away by intuition, and in that flowing I observe that that feeling arises from a terrible paradox: while the nature of beaches is invaded by people, the cities built to live, find themselves deserted. Then I see a plague in constant movement prepared for invation. Mónica Salinero |
